The Daily Dose Of God December 31

Memory Verse; But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship. Galatians 4:4,5

Revelation 22:12-21  Proverbs 31

“In the moment when I truly understand my enemy, understand him well enough to defeat him, then in that very moment I also love him. I think it’s impossible to really understand somebody, what they want, what they believe, and not love them the way they love themselves. And then, in that very moment when I love them.... I destroy them.  (Orson Scott Card, Ender's Game)

O God, by the leading of a star you manifested your only Son to the peoples of the earth: Lead us, who know you now by faith, to your presence, where we may see your glory face to face; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. (Contemporary Collects, Book of Common Prayer, 1979 version, Protestant Episcopal Church in the USA)

Revelation 21-22:11  Proverbs 30

A weary world rejoices--still weary, still wounded, still waiting--but awake to the promise of coming redemption, restoration, and rest. (@KaitlynSchiess)

Lord, with your coming, our lives have a greater demand placed upon them. Help us learn the art of active, consistent service while maintaining enough silent spaces to hear your call. Amen. (Commonprayer.net)

Memory Verse; But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship. Galatians 4:4,5

Revelation 19:11-20  Proverbs 29

God became human and poor for our sake, to raise up our flesh, to recover our divine image, to recreate humanity. We no longer observe distinctions arriving from the flesh, but are to bear within ourselves only the seal of God, by whom and for whom we were created. We are to be so formed and molded by -Jesus that we are recognized as belonging to his one family. If only we could be what we hope to be, by the great kindness of our generous God! (Gregory of Nazianzus)

Lord, your coming is still miraculous. Your joining the family of the poor and displaced still baffles and convicts us. Keep us by your manger until we learn the way of love. Amen.  (Commonprayer.net)

Memory Verse; But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship. Galatians 4:4,5

Revelation 18-19:10  Proverbs 28

This Advent we look to the Wise Men to teach us where to focus our attention. We set our sights on things above, where God is. We draw closer to Jesus… When our Advent journey ends, and we reach the place where Jesus resides in Bethlehem, may we, like the Wise Men, fall on our knees and adore him as our true and only King. (Mark Zimmermann)

Let the just rejoice, for their Justifier is born.

Let the sick and infirm rejoice, for their Savior is born.

Let the captives rejoice, for their Redeemer is born.

Let slaves rejoice, for their Master is born.

Let free people rejoice, for their Liberator is born.

Let all Christians rejoice, for Jesus Christ is born.

Amen. (Augustine of Hippo)

Memory Verse; But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship. Galatians 4:4,5

Revelation 17  Proverbs 27

There are two ways, one of life and one of death, but a great difference between the two ways. The way of life, then, is this: first, you shall love God who made you; second, love your neighbor as yourself, and do not do to another what you would not want done to you. (Didache)

Lord, it sounds so easy to follow you because you only call us to love. But love is too much for us! Overwhelm us with your love so that our song of praise might continue in patient kindness and generous support of our neighbors throughout the day. Amen. (Commonprayer.net)

The Daily Dose Of God December 26

Memory Verse; But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship. Galatians 4:4,5

Revelation 15-16  Proverbs 26

Like the jester, Christ defies custom and scorns crowned heads. Like a wandering troubadour, he has no place to lay his head. Like the clown in the circus parade, he satirises existing authority by riding into town replete with regal pageantry when he has no earthly power. Like a minstrel, he frequents dinners and parties. At the end, he is consumed by his enemies in a mocking caricature of royal paraphernalia. He is crucified amidst snickers and taunts with a sign over his head that lampoons his laughable claim. (Harvey Cox)

Lord, help us live so foolishly for you that we draw onlookers and those who would deride us. And while they watch and mock, change all our hearts that we might learn to laugh at the foolishness this world calls normal and run away with the circus that is real life. Amen. (Commonprayer.net)

Memory Verse; But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship. Galatians 4:4,5

Revelation 14  Proverbs 25

God is not dead, nor doth He sleep; The Wrong shall fail, the Right prevail, With peace on earth, good-will to men.  (Henry Wadsworth Longfellow)

Oh, God-With-Us,

For so long you have promised

forgiveness, peace, salvation.

Now in my heart, I am filled with joy

because of your coming.

Thank you for your promises
and for the way I can trust in you.
I feel a new freedom in my life
and a courage I have not known before.

I know you came to save me and bring new life
and I am so grateful to you.
Let me show my thankfulness
with my life.
You have brought me through the darkness
and into the light of your saving grace.

Guide my feet on the way of peace.

The Daily Dose Of God December 24

Memory Verse; But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship. Galatians 4:4,5

Revelation 13  Proverbs 24

God gives God. That is the gift God always ultimately gives. Because nothing is greater and we have no greater need, God gives God. God gives God, and we only need to slow long enough to unwrap the greatest Gift with our time: time in His Word, time in His presence, time at His feet.  (Ann Voskamp, The Greatest Gift)

Oh, king of us all.

I find myself standing before

your strength and splendor

watching, waiting

and filled with total joy.

You have lifted my mind in hope.
Now help me to open my life
to the coming of the Spirit.

I want to be like Mary, your mother.
Her wonderful courage and strength
inspire me to do the same.
She simply said Yes
and the impossible was done.

Thank you for this Advent journey.
The anticipation has filled my life
and made me long for
a closer relationship with you.

My life gets so busy that I forget to focus.
Thank you for guidance.
Thank you for the quiet moments
when I have felt your love.

Nothing will be impossible with God.

The Daily Dose Of God December 23

Memory Verse; But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law,  to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship. Galatians 4:4,5

Revelation 12  Proverbs 22:17-23

The whole point of what -Jesus was up to was that he was doing close up, in the present, what he was promising long-term in the future. And what he was promising for that future and doing in the present was not saving souls for a disembodied eternity but rescuing -people from the corruption and decay of the way the world presently is so they could enjoy, already in the present, that renewal of creation which is God’s ultimate purpose and so they could thus become colleagues and partners in that large project.  (Bishop N. T. Wright)

Thank you, Lord, that your promises are not for some distant future but are to be claimed right now today. Teach us what we must do and say in our local communities and in our larger world to participate in your promise. Amen. (Commonprayer.net)

Revelation 10-11  Proverbs 21-22:16

Openness to God demands our growing acceptance that we cannot create blueprints for our own lives. Though God’s character is unchanging, the ways of God are unpredictable, and there is a difference between arbitrariness and unpredictability.”

(Enuma Okoro, Silence and Other Surprising Invitations of Advent)

Our Gracious Father, We praise Christ who is the first and last, who was dead and is alive. He delivers us from the tyranny of fear and limits the time of our testing. If we are faithful until death, Christ will give us the crown of life. Open our ears to hear Your Spirit that we may receive grace to overcome. We bless You in Christ's name, amen. (Adah Hutchcraft)

Revelation 8:6-9  Proverbs 19-20

I don't think it's very nice to burp the baby Jesus," she whispered, "as if he had colic......Do you suppose he could have had colic?" I said, "I don't know why not," and I didn't. He could have had colic, or been fussy, or hungry like any other baby. After all, that was the whole point of Jesus--that he didn't come down on a cloud like something out of "Amazing Comics" but that he was born and lived ... a real person.  (Barbara Robinson, "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever")

Memory Verse; But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship. Galatians 4:4,5

Revelation 7-8:5  Proverbs 17-18

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. (Luke 2:14 KJV)

God,  Even when my life feels chaotic, I can experience Your peace because of what Jesus did on the cross.  Thank You for making this possible by sending us Your Son!  He has made a way for us to know and experience You!

Peace is evidence that You are with me, and love me! Even when life feels out of control, I can cling to the truth that Your peace Isn't based on my feelings or circumstances- but on Your character and faithfulness!

When I don't feel at peace, please make Your presence known to me. Remind me that You're are in control. Give me Your strength and comfort when the world feels unsafe.  Protect my heart and mind from the weight of my feelings and thoughts.

Allow me to sense Your presence, and to live with confidence that You are always near.  Let my life be an example of Your peace that surpasses understanding.  In Jesus Name,  Amen!

Memory Verse; But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship. Galatians 4:4,5

Revelation 6  Proverbs 15:30-16

A lowly Babe lies in the lowly cradle of a lowly town, the offspring of a lowly mother. Look again. That child is the eternal 'I AM.' He whose Deity never had birth, is born 'the woman’s Seed.' He, whom no infinitudes can hold, is contained within infant’s age, and infant’s form. He, who never began to be, as God, here begins to be, as man. And can it be, that the great 'I AM THAT I AM' shrinks into our flesh, and is little upon our earth, as one newborn of yesterday? It is so.   (Henry Law)

O Lord, in whom is our hope, remove far from us, we pray, empty hopes and presumptuous confidence. Make our hearts so right. With your most holy and loving heart, that hoping in you we may do good; until that day when faith and hope will be abolished by sight and possession, and love shall be all in all.

Amen.  (Christina Rossetti)

Revelation 4-5  Proverbs 15:1-29

If Christ had not gone to the cross and suffered in our stead, the just for the unjust, there would not have been a spark of hope for us. There would have been a mighty gulf between ourselves and God, which no man ever could have passed. (J.C. Ryle)

Father, forgive us for the role we have played that cheapens innocent life and glorifies violence. Bring justice like a roaring river to sweep away attitudes that unjustly take innocent life.  Establish the justice that hates what is evil and clings to what is good. Amen (REM)

This is the homely heart of Incarnation, this meeting of God in man with men and women, this simple face of divine graciousness in ordinary life rather than in the hymns of church fathers or in the dry elaborations of theologians.”

(Eugene Kennedy, Joy of Being Human)

Try as we might, Lord, we cannot carry the full load of another’s burden. Only you can take on our burdens in a way that frees us to walk upright and confident in our future. Help us learn to trust you even as we continue to lend a hand to others. Amen.(Commonprayer.net)

Revelation 2  Proverbs 12-13

Advent is the time of promise; it is not yet the time of fulfillment. We are still in the midst of everything and in the logical inexorability and relentlessness of destiny.…Space is still filled with the noise of destruction and annihilation, the shouts of self-assurance and arrogance, the weeping of despair and helplessness. But round about the horizon the eternal realities stand silent in their age-old longing. There shines on them already the first mild light of the radiant fulfillment to come. From afar sound the first notes as of pipes and voices, not yet discernable as a song or melody. It is all far off still, and only just announced and foretold. But it is happening, today. (Alfred Delp, Advent of the Heart: Seasonal Sermons And Prison Writings 1941-1944)

Jesus, may this day, we focus on the Power of You.  Many are the hardships, illnesses and the decaying of physical bodies. Many are the hits upon us from the enemy.  But, Jesus, You are the genuine Power in each of us, Your people.  We do not bow to the enemy or the hits.  We may get knocked down, but we will not bow.  For, we know that for every knocked down, You will reach out Your hand and pull us up.  So for all the souls that feel powerless this day, may they focus on Your hand reaching out to them, and may they grab hold and be lifted up.  Amen (Prayers Cross)

Revelation 1:9-20  Proverbs 10-11

Into this world, this demented inn

in which there is absolutely no room for him at all,

Christ comes uninvited.  ( Thomas Merton)

Advent Prayer

In our secret yearnings

we wait for your coming,

and in our grinding despair

we doubt that you will.

And in this privileged place

we are surrounded by witnesses who yearn more than do we

and by those who despair more deeply than do we.

Look upon your church and its pastors

in this season of hope

which runs so quickly to fatigue

and in this season of yearning

which becomes so easily quarrelsome.

Give us the grace and the impatience

to wait for your coming to the bottom of our toes,

to the edges of our fingertips.

We do not want our several worlds to end.

Come in your power

and come in your weakness

in any case

and make all things new.

Amen. (Walter Brueggemann, Awed to Heaven, Rooted in Earth: Prayers of Walter Brueggemann)

Catch Up Day Proverbs 7-8

It is a fair, even-handed, noble adjustment of things, that while there is infection in disease and sorrow, there is nothing in the world so irresistibly contagious as laughter and good humour.”

(Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol)

Jesus, this day we pray for comfort that can only come from You. Countless prayers are spoken for illnesses, poverty, crime, and countless hits upon the world.  We do not cease, Jesus in praying.  At times our focus remains on the subject of prayer. Sometimes we grow weary with the issue.  It is at these times that we turn our focus back onto  Who we are praying to.  The things happening to ourselves and others is very hard not to see or feel, but we can't remain focused on that. The enemy places the focus on the subject and not the answer. You truly hear our prayers and You truly answer. So, this day Jesus, we pray that You are the ENTIRE focus and yes, we will receive strength and endurance and a full force of praise and praying to you! You hear all! You answer all! In total reality, he comes in the form of the beggar, of the dissolute human child in ragged clothes, asking for help. He confronts you in every person that you meet. As long as there are people, Christ will walk the earth as your neighbor, as the one through whom God calls you, speaks to you, makes demands on you. Deitrich Bonhoeffer

God of love,

Your son, Jesus,

I’ll be so glad when all our goodbyes are over. When all our tears are dried. When all our broken hearts are mended. When all death and sickness die. I guess this is where Advent begins. Right in the pain of, Come quickly, Lord. It hurts down here."

Nicholas of Myra (Fourth Century)

The original “Old St. Nick” who inspired the tradition of Santa Claus, Nicholas was bishop of Myra in fourth-century Turkey. Little is known about his life except that he entrusted himself to -Jesus at an early age and, when his parents died, gave all of their possessions to the poor. While serving as bishop, Nicholas learned of three girls who were going to be sold into slavery by their father. Moved to use the church’s wealth to ransom the lives of these little ones, he tossed three bags of gold through the family’s window. We recall this ancient Christmas gift, even as we remember that 1.2 million children are trafficked each year in the global sex trade today.

Lord -Jesus Christ, you welcomed the little children to come unto you and invited us to come like them. Help us see how we can welcome children as you have welcomed us into your body. Amen.  (commonprayer.net)

Strange, isn’t it? Each man’s life touches so many other lives. When he isn’t around he leaves an awful hole, doesn’t he?” (Clarence  - George Bailey's guardian angel in "It's a Wonderful Life")

May the sounds of Advent stir a longing in your people.  O, God.  Come again to set us free from the dullness of routine and the poverty of our imaginations.  Break the patterns which bind us to small commitments and to the stale answers we have given to questions of no importance.  Let the advent trumpet blow, let the walls of our defenses crumble, and make a place in our lives for the freshness of your love, well-lived in the Spirit, and still given to all who know their need and dare receive it.  Amen  (Howard Thurman)

Catch Up Day Psalms145

There are some upon this earth of yours who lay claim to know us, and who do their deeds of passion, pride, ill-will, hatred, envy, bigotry, and selfishness in our name; who are as strange to us and all our kith and kin, as if they had never lived. Remember that, and charge their doings on themselves, not us.

(Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol)

Now may the fragrance of his peace

Soar through your heart like the dove released:

Hide in His wings, oh weary, distant soul,

He'll guide your spirit home.

And may His love poured from on high

Flow to the depths of your deepest sigh;

Oh come and drink from the only living stream

And on His shoulder lean.

Most Gracious Father,

By Your grace, we made it through another day. We dedicate our waking and sleeping to You, our work and our rest, our companionship and solitude, along with all our needs. May we trust You with today and so trust You with the future. Let us commit to You what we now have and rest assured You will provide all that is needed up ahead. In the name of Christ, amen.
