Choose Discretion

Proverbs 4:10-15

Hook:  Memorize: If you take your neighbor to court, do not betray another’s
confidence, or the one who hears it may shame you  and the charge against
you will stand.  Proverbs 25:9,10

On December 18th, 2013, GQ Magazine[2] published an interview with Phil Robertson,
a cast member of the A&E reality TV series Duck Dynasty and the head of his family-
owned hunting supplies business Duck Commander, for the January 2014 print issue.
In the interview, Robertson was quoted as stating that homosexuality is a “sin" and
condemned gay relationships as unnatural and illogical, citing his devout commitment
to the teachings of the Bible.

What does the Duck Dynasty story have to do with our memory Verse, if at all?
Did Phil act with discretion or not?

Book:  Proverbs 25: 1-10

These are more proverbs of Solomon, compiled by the men of Hezekiah king
of Judah VRS 1

Read 1 Kings 4:32  How man proverbs did Solomon speak?  3000

There are two collections  in Proverbs of Solomon’s sayings: 10:1-22:16 & 25:1-29:27
These total about 500 proverbs add maybe a few in Ecclesiastics and you can see we
have lost most of Solomon’s writings.

Does it surprise you that Solomon did not write all of the book of Proverbs?

Solomon reigned from 970 B.C. to 930 B.C  Hezekiah Reigned about 727-696 B.C.
About 270 later.  So for those 270 years these proverbs were oral tradition, until
Hezekiah had them written down.

Interesting fact is a contemporary of Hezekiah is the prophet Isaiah and he may have
headed this project and my why they were so easily  added into Old Testament scripture.
This a look into how we arrived tohave the OT.

It is the glory of God to conceal a matter;
to search out a matter is the glory of kings.
As the heavens are high and the earth is deep,
so the hearts of kings are unsearchable.  VRS 2,3

Verses 2,3 are called antithetic Parallelism means contrasting with similar elements.

How would you sum these verses up:  There is one God of the universe and even the
best king is not it!

A king busies himself searching out a matter, looking into many things, finding out what
there is to find out; he is a human being and must if he is going to know, and he can
because he has the men, and the money of the kingdom at his disposal.  But God
doesent have to search things out; He know all about everything.
Pondering the Proverbs Donald Hunt

The last word unsearchable in verse 3 ties both verses together

What would it be important for the king to know?

As God is about king and king can not know all God knows, so a king is above and
average man and can not know what the king knows.

Someone read Deut 2929

Remove the dross from the silver, and a silversmith can produce a vessel;
remove wicked officials from the king’s presence,  and his throne will be
established through righteousness. Verse 4,5

The key word is Remove it is what ties these two verses together.  It speaks to an
active decision. When you are in leadership chief responsibility is to actively remove the
wicked for righteousness towin.

The word picture is the following:  Raw silver ore has to be refined to be usable.  This is
by discarding all of it’s alloy’s and impurities.  This was done by melting the ore and
causing the dross to be scraped off the top.  Sometimes this was done seven times.
Solomon is telling us whether it is a kingdom or a heart removing wickedness
takes work.

As we approach the New Year, what areas does dross need to be removed from you life?

What are you going to do about it?  Would you share?

Do not exalt yourself in the king’s presence,
    and do not claim a place among his great men;
it is better for him to say to you, “Come up here,”
than for him to humiliate you before his nobles.  Verse 6,7

Read Luke 14:7-10

Humility in these two passages means: not being a social snob.  Not making yourself more
important than you are.  (Name dropping, Name accomplishment ETC) or only acquiring
relationship for your own gain and status.  God honors those who have friends on the bottom
and top rung;

What can we learn from these two passages?
1.       Let Others blow your own
2.       Do not be seeking fame
3.        God Makes Both poor and powerful let God sort out where you should be!

What you have seen with your eyes
do not bring[a] hastily to court, for what will you do in the end
if your neighbor puts you to shame? Verse 8

How do you initially tend to react when you witness something wrong

And do not know the details surrounding the event?  According to this text what should we do?
What is it called?
What have you  looked guilty, but actually quit innocent?

If you take your neighbor to court,
 do not betray another’s confidence,
or the one who hears it may shame you
and the charge against you will stand. 9,10

Sum it up?  Loose lips sink ships
Being discreet builds a good reputation

Can you think of a Court Case where this, verse fits here in Denver?

Fox News reporter and the Shooter in Aurora  theater shooting

Can you think of a situation where loose lips have caused Shame?

Look: Can you think of another Scripture that sums up the teaching of
Proverbs 25:1-10?

My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick
to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, 20 because human
anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.  Therefore,
get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly
accept the word planted in you, which can save you.  James 1:19-21

LOVE COMES TO TOWN

Snippet

If we look beyond  the manger to the cross of Calvary,
We will know the reason Christmas
Brings such joy to you and me D. Dehan

Scripture

Dear friends, let us love one another, because love comes from God. Whoever loves is a child of God and knows God. 8 Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is love. 9 And God showed his love for us by sending his only Son into the world, so that we might have life through him. 10 This is what love is: it is not that we have loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the means by which our sins are forgiven. Dear friends, if this is how God loved us, then we should love one another.  No one has ever seen God, but if we love one another, God lives in union with us, and his love is made perfect in us. 1 John 4:7-12 GNT

When love comes to town by U2
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=th1kQER770M

I was a sailor, I was lost at sea
I was under the waves
Before love rescued me
I was a fighter, I could turn on a thread
Now I stand accused of the things I've said
Love comes to town I'm gonna jump that train
When love comes to town I'm gonna catch that flame
Maybe I was wrong to ever let you down
But I did what I did before love came to town
I used to make love under a red sunset
I was making promises I was soon to forget
She was pale as the lace of her wedding gown
But I left her standing before love came to town
I ran into a juke joint when I heard a guitar scream
The notes were turning blue, I was dazing in a dream
As the music played I saw my life turn around
That was the day before love came to town
When love comes to town I'm gonna jump that train
When love comes to town I'm gonna catch that flame
Maybe I was wrong to ever let you down
But I did what I did before love came to town
[Repeat Chorus]
I was there when they crucified my Lord
I held the scabbard when the soldier drew his sword
I threw the dice when they pierced his side
But I've seen love conquer the great divide
When love comes to town I'm gonna catch that train
When love comes to town I'm gonna catch that flame
Maybe I was wrong to ever let you down
But I did what I did before love came to town

CHRISTMAS WITH A POINT

Snippet

“I think there must be something wrong with me, Linus. Christmas is coming, but I’m not happy. I don’t feel the way I’m supposed to feel. I just don’t understand Christmas, I guess. I like getting presents and sending Christmas cards, and decorating trees and all that, but I’m still not happy. I always end up feeling depressed.”–Charlie Brown

Scripture

The child’s father and mother marveled at what was said about him. 34 Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother: “This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too.” Luke 2:33-35

[Intro: Ghostface Killah]
Holy Jesus, I gotta drop all these toys off
Mrs. Claus, Mrs. Claus, bring me my robe & my slippers
I gotta go!
[Ghostface Killah]
Smell the pinetrees in the air, sleigh bells are ringing
Toy stores are out of control, and kids singing
That night before Christmas, dashing through the snow
Rudolph the Reindeer, red nose that glow
It's all about the candycanes and Christmas list
North Pole and that chubby jolly old Saint Nick
The little elves getting busy, in Santa workshop
And how gingerbread men keep they buttons on top
Wooden soldiers and chestnuts, rosting like marshmellows
Goodfellas, chocolate pudding pops and Jell-O's
It's the gift, the cookies and milk on the mantle
The mistletoe, that scent from that peppermint candles
That warm French vanilla, mean coat with zippers
Bareskin robe dragon with Versace slippers
Around the fireplace we breathe, shirts are short sleave
We stayin' up all night on Christmas Eve
[Chorus: Shawn Wigs]
It's the season for sharing, season of the gift
Season for snow, it's December 25th
That time of the year, we dress like Saint Nick
Stirring whipcream into that hot cup of Quick
It's the season for sharing, season of the gift
Season for snow, it's December 25th
That time of the year, we suprise all the kids
Buy gifts for your loved ones and diamonds for ya wiz
[Ghostface Killah]
I see snowmen, snowflakes, cinnamon cakes
Sisters and brothers, sliding down garbage can covers
Snowball fights, eggnog splashed with Hennessey
Bet Christmas is Christmas from New York to Tennessee
The Kris Kringles, the Jingling Babies
All them late nights wrapping gifts, driving you crazy
And Jack Frost is outside, freezing it up
Got the hood and the goose just to loosen you up
And all the homes is all lit with some many lights
See the trees through the windows, glittered up at night
Gingerbread house, bumping that Jingle Bell Rock
And all them little bad kids get coal in they socks
[Hook: Ghostface Killah]
Ghost knows when you be sleeping
And Ghost knows when you are awake
And I know if you been bad or good
So be good for old Ghostface
[Chorus]
[Outro: Ghostface Killah]
Hahahaha, we made it, wish you all a Merry Christmas
And a Happy New Year, hahahaha
And to all a good night, good night to all
To Staten Island, hahah, nah, cut it, cut it off - son

GUESTS

Scripture

Whoever welcomes a prophet in the name of a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward; and whoever welcomes a righteous person in the name of a righteous person will receive the reward of the righteous;  and whoever gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones in the name of a disciple—truly I tell you, none of these will lose their reward.”  Matthew 10:41-43

Song
Christmas Guest by Johnny Cash
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tTwAKf0OLo4

It happened one day near December's end
Two neighbors called on an old friend
And they found his shop so meager and lame
Made gay with a thousand bows of green
And Conrad was sittin' with face ashined
When he suddenly stopped as he stiched a twine
And he said "Oh friends at dawn today
When the cock was crowin' the night away
The Lord appeared in a dream to me
And said 'I'm comin' your guest to be.'
So I've been busy with feet astir
And strewin' my shop with branches of fir
The table is spread and the kettle is shined
And over the rafters the holly is twined
Now I'll wait for my Lord to appear
And listen closely so I will hear His step
As He nears my humble place
And I'll open the door and look on His face"
So his friends went home and left Conrad alone
For this was the happiest day he'd known
For long since his family had passed away
And Conrad had spent many a sad Christmas day
But he knew with the Lord as his Christmas guest
This Christmas would be the dearest and best
So he listened with only joy in his heart
And with every sound he would rise with a start
And look for the Lord to be at his door
Like the vision he'd had a few hours before
So he ran to the window after hearin' a sound
But all he could see on the snow-covered ground
Was a shabby begger who's shoes were torn
And all of his clothes were ragged and worn
But Conrad was touched and he went to the door
And he said
"You know, your feet must be frozen and sore
I have some shoes in my shop for you
And a coat that'll keep you warmer too"
So with grateful heart, the man went away
But Conrad noticed the time of day
And wondered what made the Lord so late
And how much longer he'd have to wait
When he heard a knock he ran to the door
But it was only a stranger once more
A bent ol' lady with a shawl of black
With a bundle of kindlin' piled on her backShe asked for only a place to rest
But that was reserved for Conrad's great guest
But her voice seemed to plead "Don't send me away
Let me rest for awhile on Christmas day"
So Conrad brewed her a steamin' cup
And told her to sit at the table and sup
But after she left he was filled with dismay
For he saw that the hours were slippin' away
And the Lord hadn't come as He said He would
And Conrad felt sure he'd misunderstood
When out of the stillness he heard a cry
"Please help me, and tell me where am I!"
So again he opened his friendly door
And stood disappointed as twice before
It was only a child who'd wandered away
And was lost from her family on Christmas day
Again, Conrad's heart was heavy and sad
But he knew he should make the little girl glad
So he called her in and he wiped her tears
And quieted all her childish fears
Then he led her back to her home once more
But as he entered his own darkened door
He knew the Lord was not comin' today
For the hours of Christmas had passed away
So he went to his room and he knelt down to pray
And he said "Dear Lord, why did You delay?
What kept You from comin' to call on me?
For I wanted so much Your Face to see"
When soft in the silence, a voice he heard
"Lift up your head, for I kept my word
Three times my shadow crossed your floor
And three times I came to your lonely door
I was the begger with bruised, cold feet
And I was the woman you gave somethin' to eat
I was the child on the homeless street.
Three times I knocked and three times I came in
And each time I found the warmth of a friend
Of all the gifts love is the best
And I was honored to be your Christmas guest

Sentence Prayer

Lord, lay some soul upon my heart,
And love that soul through me;
And may I nobly do my part
To win that soul for thee

celebrate annually the fourteenth and fifteenth days of the month of Adar 22 as the time when the Jews got relief from their enemies, and as the month when their sorrow was turned into joy and their mourning into a day of celebration. So the Jews agreed to continue the celebration they had begun, doing what Mordecai had written to them. Esther 9:21-23

Father
We thank you for good Saint Nicholas who was known for his love and care for children.
Because of his example,  we ask you to help us always to take care of children, to protect and
guide them, and to keep them safe. Help us to be open to all that children can teach us about pure joy and unconditional love. May we in turn help our children to grow into the children of God that you created them to be. Keep us mindful of the needs of others and to reach out with love and generosity as Saint Nicholas did. We rejoice in your servant Nicholas and pray that we too may follow you with singleness of heart and mind. Amen.

Proverbs 4:10-15

Hook: Major Life Decisions

A Right choice early in life can have a lasting effect – a blessing or a curse?

Example Marriage

What major Choice that you made early in life, set you on a path of blessing?

Book: Seeking God’s Righteous Ways Proverbs 4:10-15

Step Wisely

Read Listen, my son, accept what I say,

Wise choices happen when we have an open mind and receiving heart
Accept implies a willingness to obey wisdom.

and the years of your life will be many. Proverbs 4:10 NIV

Length of Life  Read Exodus 20:12
Goodness of Life Read 4:22,23

Read Verse 11: I instruct you in the way of wisdom
and lead you along straight paths.

Notice Verse 10 is almost a legal proposal-Eleven gives the key to accepting and obeying-A Relationship.  Ever walk with someone and no words spoke but could sense to hurry or speed up?

Read Verse 12 When you walk, your steps will not be
hampered;  when you run, you will not stumble.

The picture is a son walking with his father or running with his father-2 possible meaning never encounter an obstacle in journey of life or when we stumble it will not hamper are walk with the father?

In this context I believe the obstacles of life and our failure do not take us out of our walk with the father.  But it is His wisdom in His word and Spirit as we obey we stumble less and walk more confindently.

Friend or Foe?

Read Verse 13: Hold on to instruction, do not let it go; guard it well, for it is your life.
The Hebrew Word used for Instruction Musar: includes the idea of discipline, chastening, and correction-Not just learning

Instruction and wisdom demand our faithfulness why?  Because it is a life and death issue.

Read Verse 14: Do not set foot on the path of the wicked or walk in the way of evildoers.

In What ways are most tempted to follow evil?
1.
Read Exodus 23:2  Everybody’s doing it
2.     Acts 4:18-20  To get along you have to go along
3.     1 Timothy 6:11 But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness.

Read Verse 15: Avoid it, do not travel on it; turn from it and go on your way.
Proverbs 4:15 is a wake up call that evil must be avoided at all cost!  There is to be no flirting with evil!

I'm dreaming of a white Christmas
Just like the ones I used to know

With every Christmas card I write
May your days be merry and bright
And may all your Christmases be white

I'm dreaming of a white Christmas
With every Christmas card I write
May your days be merry and bright
And may all your Christmases be white

Father you send snow as one of the good and perfect gifts from above thank you.  Jesus you are the redeemer who makes our sin stained lives as white as snow, thank   Jesus you are the redeemer who makes our sin stained lives as white as snow, thank  you.  Holy Spirit you fall on my life as softly as the first snow falls.
Help me to not make or eat yellow snow today.  Keep me as pure as the driven snow from your hand.  Help me to see the gifts you send my way today-as simple and deep as the snow on the ground.  Amen
