Holy Spirit Study 15 Teacher Notes

Holy Spirit 15

                          1 Corinthians 3:1-4

Teacher’s notes

Hook:  If it walks like a duck, talk like a duck it is a ____________________________
What is the evidence of the infilling of the Holy Spirit In 1 Corinthians 3 ?
Evidence of the infilling is not the miraculous but visible display of loving one another.

Look:  If you misunderstood 1 Corinthians 2:4, 13,16
Popular view of this passage:
Paul has spoken to us about three categories of men. There is the natural man (1 Corinthians 2:14), who is patterned after Adam and rejects the things of the Spirit. There is the spiritual man (1 Corinthians 2:15), who knows the things of God. And there is the carnal man who knows the things of God, yet in some significant ways is still characterized by the flesh. Which one are you?
The Spiriits demonstration in verse 4 indicates Paul was saying He and the Apostles had the gift of the inspiration of the Holy spirit-And Yes you and I can know in a general way the mind of God-but not specific ways of inspiration.  Flesh orientated Christian known by acts of flesh!

Book: 1 Corinthians 3

Who is the subject of the first Four verses of Chapter 3?
Is Verse one a change in context?

What does the word flesh mean?
There is a difference between being fleshy (sarkinos, used in 2 Corinthians 3:3) and being fleshly (the Greek word sarkikos, used here in this passage).
i. Fleshy is simply “made of flesh”; it can speak of the weakness that is common to every fallen human.
ii. Fleshly, when used of a person, means “characterized by the flesh.” It speaks of the one who can and should do differently but does not. Paul says that the Corinthians were sarkikos.
David Guzik's Commentary on the Bible 1 Corinthians 3
sárks ("flesh") is not always evil in Scripture. Indeed, it is used positively in relation to sexual intercourse in marriage (Eph 5:31) – as well as for the sinless human body of Jesus (Jn 1:14; 1 Jn 4:2,3). Indeed, flesh (what is physical) is necessary for the body to live out the faith the Lord works in (Gal 2:20).]
4561 (sarks) is generally negative, referring to making decisions (actions) according to self – i.e. done apart from faith (independent from God's inworking).

When is the passage written to Christians or Non-Christians
Christians who are satisfying their self and not obeying the Spirit!

Where can we more fully understand the metaphor between Milk and meat?
Hebrews 5:11-6:3  (Good example of poor division chapters causes confusion)
Milk                                                       Meat
Righteousness-Right way to live-Right way to worship God-Right way to love
Constant use distinguish right versus wrong
Elementary
Basic Facts
Milk is Knowledge                                         Meat is constant practice of applying scripture
Of basic facts
Why does Paul say the Corinthians were only ready for Milk In 1 Cor 3?
There were fighting over facts, they were bickering who to follow, instead of practicing how to distinguish between good an evil in loving each other.

1 Corinthians 3:16,17

Who is the Temple of God?
Christians Individually and collectively.  What makes the Temple of God?  The indwelling of His Spirit!
The Spirit of God dwells in you. The word used for temple (naos) refers to the actual sanctuary, the place of the deity’s dwelling, in contrast to the broader word hieron, which was the temple area in general.

What defiles the Temple of God?
1.       By doing what the Corinthians were doing
1 Corinthians 3:3
You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly?
2.       Dividing the Temple of God into factions Us Versus Them
For we are co-workers in God’s service; you are God’s field, God’s building. 1 Cor 3:9
3.       Building or not building the Temple or Kingdom of God with inferior materials

If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, 13 their work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work. 14 If what has been built survives, the builder will receive a reward. 15 If it is burned up, the builder will suffer loss but yet will be saved—even though only as one escaping through the flames.  1 Cor 3:12-15

4.       Wordly Wisdom and Worldly power

Do not deceive yourselves. If any of you think you are wise by the standards of this age, you should become “fools” so that you may become wise. 1 Cor 3:18

When are we destroying the Temple?
When are we harming and not building up each Christian all of 1 Corinthians 3

Where does the Holy Spirit dwell in believers?
A.      Jeremiah 24:7
B.      Jeremiah 31:33
C.      Ezekiel 11:19
D.      Ezekiel 36:26
E.       2 Corinthians 1:22

Why is infighting foolish?
Because we are fellow workers and God not us brings the harvest.
Took: The divisions in Corinth were a threat to what?
The divine inspiration of apostolic ministry
That human personality greater than the God’s power
That power and not love be the evidence of spirit

A BAD DAY

Snippet

You choose to be happy, and in life we have as many good days as bad days. I try to find and record those songs that pull you through the bad days, and keep you believing that the good days are just around the corner.  Rodney Atkins

Scripture

If God gives such attention to the appearance of wildflowers—most of which are never even seen—don’t you think he’ll attend to you, take pride in you, do his best for you? What I’m trying to do here is to get you to relax, to not be so preoccupied with getting, so you can respond to God’s giving. People who don’t know God and the way he works fuss over these things, but you know both God and how he works. Steep your life in God-reality, God-initiative, God-provisions. Don’t worry about missing out. You’ll find all your everyday human concerns will be met.

“Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don’t get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes. Matthew 6:33,34 Message

Song
Bad Day by Daniel Powter
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gH476CxJxfg

Where is the moment we needed the most
You kick up the leaves and the magic is lost
They tell me your blue skies fade to grey
They tell me your passion's gone away
And I don't need no carryin' on
You stand in the line just to hit a new low
You're faking a smile with the coffee to go
You tell me your life's been way off line
You're falling to pieces everytime
And I don't need no carryin' on
Cause you had a bad day
You're taking one down
You sing a sad song just to turn it around
You say you don't know
You tell me don't lie
You work at a smile and you go for a ride
You had a bad day
The camera don't lie
You're coming back down and you really don't mind
You had a bad day
You had a bad day
Well you need a blue sky holiday
The point is they laugh at what you say
And I don't need no carryin' on
You had a bad day
You're taking one down
You sing a sad song just to turn it around
You say you don't know
You tell me don't lie
You work at a smile and you go for a ride
You had a bad day
The camera don't lie
You're coming back down and you really don't mind
You had a bad day
(Oh.. Holiday..)
Sometimes the system goes on the blink
And the whole thing turns out wrong
You might not make it back and you know
That you could be well oh that strong
And I'm not wrong
So where is the passion when you need it the most
Oh you and I
You kick up the leaves and the magic is lost
Cause you had a bad day
You're taking one down
You sing a sad song just to turn it around
You say you don't know
You tell me don't lie
You work at a smile and you go for a ride
You had a bad day
You've seen what you like
And how does it feel for one more time
You had a bad day
You had a bad day
Had a bad day
Had a bad day
Had a bad day
Had a bad day
Had a bad day

Sentence Prayer

This is another day, O Lord...
If I am to stand up, help me to stand bravely.
If I am to sit still, help me to sit quietly.
If I am to lie low, help me to do it patiently.
And if I am to do nothing, let me do it gallantly.”

HERO

Snippet

The three years of Jesus’ public ministry have stimulated more comment and literature across nineteen centuries than any other comparable segment of human history.  Carl F.H. Henry  A Plea for Evangelical Demonstration, Baker, 1971, p. 55.

Scripture

Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.  John 21:25

Song
Hero By Abandon
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2bN1WFt21-0

He walked the dirty streets
Famous for nothing
He said, "Come follow me"
And they came
A face like all the rest
But something was different
The Son of God would lead the way
And soon they all would say
There He goes, a Hero, a Savior to the world
Here He stands with scars in His hands
With love He gave His life so we could be free
The Savior of the world
He spoke with clarity
Walked across the sea
A single word
Would calm the storm
His touch could heal the sick
But He was called a hypocrite
Laid behind the stone
His death was shortly mourned
He left the curtain torn
And there He goes, a Hero, a Savior to the world
Here He stands with scars in His hands
With love He gave His life so we could be free
The Savior of the world
He chose to take the cross
Shed tears for the lost
The broken and the needy
Forgiving those who were and will be
The angel made it clear
He told them have no fear
He's not here, He's not here
There He goes, a Hero, a Savior to the world
Here He stands with scars in His hands
With love He gave His life so we could be free
The Savior of the world, the Savior of the world
The Savior of the world

Sentence Prayer

Father
When we were still helpless,
Christ died for the wicked at the time God Chose.
One of us might dare to die for someone good.
But now we see God’s love;
While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
God rescued us from the power of darkness
And brought us safe into the kingdom of his dear son.
By whom we are set free and our sins are forgiven.
So we rejoice in the hope we have of sharing in God’s glory.
By the Holy Spirit
God has poured into our hearts the love of Christ.  Amen.

SOBRIETY

Snippet:

Stinkin' thinkin' leads to drinking.

Scripture:

Who has woe? Who has sorrow?
Who has strife? Who has complaints?
Who has needless bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes?
 Those who linger over wine,
who go to sample bowls of mixed wine.
Do not gaze at wine when it is red,
when it sparkles in the cup,
    when it goes down smoothly!
In the end it bites like a snake
    and poisons like a viper.
Your eyes will see strange sights,
and your mind will imagine confusing things.
You will be like one sleeping on the high seas,
lying on top of the rigging.
“They hit me,” you will say, “but I’m not hurt!
They beat me, but I don’t feel it!
When will I wake up
so I can find another drink?” Proverbs 23-39-45 NIV

Song
Dear Sobriety Pistol Annie
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cXuN6l-sIdA

My hands are shaking
But I can still pour the mistake that I'm making
And I'll pour one more
It runs in my family, it runs in my blood
And just like my daddy, I can't get enough
Every last drop I say is the last
Then I drive to the store and I fill up my glass

Dear Sobriety
Please come back to me
I left you high and dry
I'm doomed for good this time
I swore I wouldn't be
I'm making a fool of me
I need you desperately
Dear Sobriety

Two years I gave in and I did not sway
And I swore to my family I'd keep it that way
Saved by the good Lord and hurt in their eyes
But life would back splatter and I compromise
If heartache won't kill you, you find something that will
And it turns out this battle is only uphill

Dear Sobriety
Please come back to me
I left you high and dry
I'm doomed for good this time
I swore I wouldn't be
Oh but I'm making a fool of me
I need you desperately
Dear Sobriety

Dear Sobriety
Please come back to me
I left you high and dry
I'm doomed for good this time
I swore I wouldn't be
Oh but I'm making a fool of me
I need you desperately
Dear Sobriety

Sentence Prayer

God grant me the serenity
To accept the things I cannot change;
Courage to change the things I can;
And wisdom to know the difference.
Living one day at a time;
Enjoying one moment at a time;
Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
Taking, as He did, this sinful world
As it is, not as I would have it;
Trusting that He will make all things right
If I surrender to His Will;
So that I may be reasonably happy in this life
And supremely happy with Him
Forever and ever in the next.
Amen.

SMALL TOWN

Snippet

Living in a small town...is like living in a large family of rather uncongenial relations. Sometimes it’s fun, and sometimes it’s perfectly awful, but it’s always good for you. People in large towns are like only-children.” ― Joyce Dennys, Henrietta Sees It Through: More News from the Home Front 1942-1945

Scripture

Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”
“Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?” Nathanael asked.
“Come and see,” said Philip.

When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, “Here truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit.” John 1:45-47 NIV

Song
Small Town John  Mellencamp
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0CVLVaBECuc

Well I was born in a small town
And I live in a small town
Prob'ly die in a small town
Oh, those small communities

All my friends are so small town
My parents live in the same small town
My job is so small town
Provides little opportunity

Educated in a small town
Taught the fear of Jesus in a small town
Used to daydream in that small town
Another boring romantic that's me

But I've seen it all in a small town
Had myself a ball in a small town
Married an L.A. doll and brought her to this small town
Now she's small town just like me

No I cannot forget where it is that I come from
I cannot forget the people who love me
Yeah, I can be myself here in this small town
And people let me be just what I want to be

Got nothing against a big town
Still hayseed enough to say
Look who's in the big town
But my bed is in a small town
Oh, and that's good enough for me

Well I was born in a small town
And I can breathe in a small town
Gonna die in this small town
And that's prob'ly where they'll bury me

Sentence Prayer

Father, Remind me that you chose to raise your own son in a small town.
Father, Remind me that knowing everyone is a way of keeping me accountable.
Jesus,  did growing up in a small town make you indifferent to man’s opinions?
Jesus,  did growing up in the intimacy of a Small town motivate you to die in love for all?
Holy Spirit,  create a hunger in me for world where your word is good as gold.
Holy Spirit,  create a hunger in me for a world where children run giggling through sprinklers.  Amen

TEMPTATION

Snippet

“Da mihi castitatem et continentiam, sed noli modo (Give me chastity and continence, but not just yet)!” ― Augustine of Hippo, Confessions

Scripture

Anyone who meets a testing challenge head-on and manages to stick it out is mighty fortunate. For such persons loyally in love with God, the reward is life and more life.
Don’t let anyone under pressure to give in to evil say, “God is trying to trip me up.” God is impervious to evil, and puts evil in no one’s way. The temptation to give in to evil comes from us and only us. We have no one to blame but the leering, seducing flare-up of our own lust. Lust gets pregnant, and has a baby: sin! Sin grows up to adulthood, and becomes a real killer.  James 1:12-15 Message

Song  I FEEL A SIN COMING ON
PISTOL ANNIE
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5bukgODOHtM

I feel a sin comin' on
I feel a right that's about to go wrong
I got a shiver down to the bone
I feel a sin comin' on
I gotta buzz in my brain
Drunk on a love goin' down like champagne
I got a feelin' it's gonna leave a lipstick stain
And I'd be the only one to blame
And you can see it
All over my face
Sweet temptation
All over the place
Give me tall dark and handsome,
Mix it up with something strong
I feel a sin (I feel a sin) comin' on
Please Jesus don't hold me back
I know it ain't mine but I want it so bad
The smoke in the whiskey
Got me feeling easy
And after I'll fade in the glass
And you can see it
All over my face
Sweet temptation
All over the place
Give me tall dark and handsome,
Mix it up with something strong
I feel a sin (I feel a sin) comin' on

And you can see it (and you can see it)
All over my face (all over my face)
Sweet temptation
All over the place
Give me tall dark and handsome,
Mix it up with something strong
I feel a sin (I feel a sin) comin' on
I feel a sin (I feel a sin) comin' on

Sentence Prayer

Parent of us all,
we know your promise of love is waiting;
we understand the Holy Spirit is your gift to all;
we hear the message of Christ’s sacrifice.
Yet, like willful children,
we need the loving arms of our Mother
to gather us into her arms when we disobey;
to teach us once again
that we have fallen short
of her expectations.
We try to repent.
We try to change our minds,
to change our lives.
Help us believe once again,
through your love and forgiveness,
that we may see Christ
in those around us and before us.

AWESOME GOD

Snippet

Eternity won’t be long enough to learn all that God is or praise him for all that he has done.  A.W. Tozer

Scripture

Come, everyone! Clap your hands!
Shout to God with joyful praise!
For the Lord Most High is awesome.
He is the great King of all the earth.
He subdues the nations before us,
putting our enemies beneath our feet.  Ps 47:1-3 NLT

Song Awesome God R Swift

Chorus: Our God is an awesome God he reigns
From heaven above with wisdom power and love
Our God is an awesome God. x2
All power he contains it, the man on his own
Abandoned the throne to approach the cross stainless
Death couldn’t shake him or derail,
three nails could pierce but couldn’t break him or make him appear taken away from his mere nature not
while slumber is hovering over the block I pray that my peers wake up
we were born out of alignment the perfect timing is now
to check for a pulse if you ain't rocked by him
I am prone to be biased when I peep the timeline behind him
And see no highness as high as him
He reigns Lord firearms are too short to aim for him
Call him extremist he leaks Katrinas when he’s brainstorming
That’s quite enormous to say the least our God is a beast
His wrath is the sound of a lion roaring
Since he’s topped by none
I’m on hip hop’s frontline screaming from the top of my lungs Our God.
Chorus: Our God is an awesome God he reigns
From heaven above with wisdom power and love
Our God is an awesome God. x2
All glory he demands it all pale in comparison
He holds the scales that you can’t tip off
Cause he can’t slip off
So I stand unanimous with no hiatus my heart is baring his manuscripts
Our bars bare him while the world swears by its barbarics
We declare him fist clinching the thin air for him
Won’t fold when it comes to making men aware of him (breathe)
He’s exactly what we could never be
Born no identity sin embedded in our pedigree
He could have let us be but saved us and set us free
Redeemed from the chokehold of sins destruction
Serve no one but him only spit so you comprehend
But in the end these words serve him no justice
Nothing exist without his signature to allow it
Lord of the ring cause all creation revolves around him
The I am more than a legend and some
So we boast in the Lord through these anthems and sing.
Chorus: Our God is an awesome God he reigns
From heaven above with wisdom power and love
Our God is an awesome God. (till fade)

Sentence Prayer

Holy one, holy and eternal.
Awesome, exciting and delightful in your holiness;
Make us pure in heart to see you;
Make us merciful to receive your kindness,
And to share our love with all your human family;
Then will you name be hallowed on earth as in heaven.  Amen (New Zealand Prayer Book Pg 111)

FIRST FAMILY

Snippet

The family was ordained of God, that children might be trained up for himself.  The family was before the church, or rather, the form of the church.  Pope Leo XIII

Scripture

Children, obey your parents because you belong to the Lord,[a] for this is the right thing to do. 2 “Honor your father and mother.” This is the first commandment with a promise: 3 If you honor your father and mother, “things will go well for you, and you will have a long life on the earth. Ephesians 6:1-3

Song
First Family  Rich Mullins
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lUqA5aEKTys

My folks they were always the first family to arrive
With seven people jammed into a car that seated five
There was one bathroom to bathe and shave in
Six of us stood in line
And hot water for only three
But we all did just fine
Talk about your miracles
Talk about your faith
My dad he could make things grow
Out of Indiana clay
Mom could make a gourmet meal
Out of just cornbread and beans
And they worked to give faith hands and feet
And somehow gave it wings
I can still hear my dad cussin'
He's working late out in the barn
The spring planting is coming
And the tractors just won't run
Mom she's done the laundry
I can see it waving on the line
Now they've stayed together
Through the pain and the strain of those times
Talk about your miracles
Talk about your faith
My dad he could make things grow
Out of Indiana clay
Mom could make a gourmet meal
Out of just cornbread and beans
And they worked to give faith hands and feet
And somehow gave it wings
And now they've raised five children
One winter they lost a son
But the pain didn't leave them crippled
And the scars have made them strong
Never picture perfect
Just a plain man and his wife
Who somehow knew the value
Of hard work, good love, and real life
Talk about your miracles
Talk about your faith
My dad he could make things grow
Out of Indiana clay
Mom could make a gourmet meal
Out of just cornbread and beans
And they worked to give faith hands and feet
And somehow gave it wings

Sentence Prayer

Dear Lord, today I turn to you to give you thanks for my mother. With your own gift of life, she bore me in her womb and gave me life. She tenderly, patiently cared for me and taught me to walk and talk. She read to me and made me laugh. No one delighted in my successes more; no one could comfort me better in my failures. I am so grateful for how she mothered me and mentored me, and even disciplined me.

Please bless her, Lord, and comfort her. Help her loving heart to continue to love and give of herself to others. Strengthen her when she is down and give her hope when she is discouraged.

Most of all, Lord, on this Mother's Day, give my mother the graces she most needs and desires today. I ask you this, in the name of Jesus, our Lord and Savior forever and ever.
