The Daily Dose of God March 27

Memory Verse; Consequently, just as one trespass resulted in condemnation for all people, so also one righteous act resulted in justification and life for all people. Romans 5:18 NIV

Daniel 2 Psalms 79

Friends, acquaint yourself with sadness. She is not an enemy. She counts the cost of love. She tells us that things matter. She helps us honour the precious things we lost and never had. She teaches us to grieve the past, to open our hearts to what might be.  Sadness is a friend.

We waste a lot of energy when we refuse to be sad. Rejected sadness can masquerade as anger, numbness, and cynicism. But sadness is just trying to tell you the truth: you lost something. And it mattered to you.

Sadness doesn't have to be your best friend. Or your only friend. She doesn't have to live in your house. But some days she will visit you. And when she does, don't be afraid to spend time with her. Make a cup of tea and say "what mattered? what have we lost? let's honour it. Joy Clarkson

Catch-Up Day Psalms 75

It helps, now and then, to step back and take the long view. The Kingdom is not only beyond our efforts: it is beyond our vision. We accomplish in our lifetime only a tiny fraction of the magnificent enterprise that is the Lord’s work. Nothing we do is complete, which is another way of saying that the Kingdom always lies beyond us. No sermon says all that should be said. No prayer fully expresses our faith. No confession brings perfection. No pastoral visit brings wholeness. No program accomplishes the Church’s mission. No set of goals and objectives includes everything. That is what we are about. We plant the seeds that one day will grow. We water seeds already planted knowing they hold future promise. We lay foundations that will need further development. We provide yeast that affects far beyond our capabilities. We cannot do everything and there is a sense of liberation in realizing that. This enables us to do something and to do it very, very well. It may be incomplete, but it is a beginning, a step along the way, an opportunity for the Lord’s grace to enter and do the rest. We may never see the end results, but that is the difference between the Master Builder and the worker. We are workers, not master builders; ministers, not messiahs. We are prophets of a future that is not our own. Oscar Romero

Lord, we know the world will kill your prophets. Nevertheless, give us words to convict, to heal, to raise up others for justice, and to offer forgiveness for those who harm us. Amen.  (Commonprayer.net)

Catch-Up Day Psalms 76

The urge to save humanity is almost always a false front for the urge to rule.  H.L. Mencken

Holy God,

We are reeling again.

Ten people killed while they were shopping for chips, milk, and maybe some ice cream.

The people on news reports were saying, "That's my grocery store.  That could have been me."

Who among us hasn't run into the store for a few things?

Who among us hasn't watched the headlines and thought, "That could have been me"?

In a crisis like this, we see people running.

We see them running away, to take shelter, looking for safety.

And we see them running toward, to get closer, looking for the people they love.

We are connected as a people, and this pain touches us all.

Engage our imaginations and move our hearts toward compassion, Lord.

Let us not merely consider these to be statistics of gun violence,

though it is astoundingly that,

but let us consider their names.

Two middle school girls shopping with their grandfather, getting snacks after school.

A mom with a toddler in her cart, in the produce section.

The people in line for their Covid shots in the pharmacy.

The man at home whose wife left for a few minutes to run a few errands.

The florist. The pharmacist.  The baker.  The stocker.

The clerk.  The manager.  The security guard.

Holy Spirit, be our Great Healer.

Gather what has been scattered.

Be merciful to those who are broken.

Be present to those traumatized.

Be with all who move toward this need.

The helpers, the therapists, the teachers, the moms, the dads.

Give strength to those who are mending broken hearts today,

Who will mend them for years to come.

And even as violence strikes again, let us not lose hope.

We are your hands and your feet.

Give us eyes to see, minds to lead, and hands to hold.

You alone have the strength to carry this people.

Carry us, God.  (Tricia Lott Williford, Writer, and Author)

Ezekiel 45-46 Psalms 74

To love means loving the unlovable. To forgive means pardoning the unpardonable. Faith means believing the unbelievable. Hope means hoping when everything seems hopeless. G.K. Chersterton

Our Gracious God,

We entrust to You those cares and sorrows upon our hearts brought to us through others. We are touched by other's lives, at times in grief for their unwise choices,  at times by the sting of betrayal or the hurt of disappointment, and oft times in solidarity with their sorrows. These experiences cause us to face that we are not in control. You call us to believe and kneel in prayer. Deliver us from the tyranny of worry and the corruption of bitterness. Hear our prayers as we cry out to You. Hold us as our ineffable pleas pour forth as tears. You are with us. You are our peace, and You are able to do the impossible. Just as we must entrust ourselves to You, so we must entrust others to Your keeping. Be merciful and preserve us in gentleness.  In the Name of Christ, amen. (Adah Hutchcraft)

Ezekiel 43-44 Psalms 73

Strive to be first: first to nod, first to smile, first to compliment, and first to forgive.

Jesus, this day, we Your followers and souls that truly serve you, come to You in massive prayers for Your healing hand and Your true and strong being of love.  So many cross our paths with prayers for salvation for members of family, friends, and souls that we know.  We come to You so much in prayers for the sick and the dying.  Jesus, we do wait and we listen.  You opened our eyes to see the hurts, our ears to hear the hurt and now we wait, we pray, we give all to You. Amen (Prayerscross)
