DRUNKENESS

Snippet

Whiskey - I like it, I always did, and that is the reason I never use it.
Robert E. Lee

Scripture

Who has trouble? Who has pain?
    Who fights? Who complains?
Who has unnecessary bruises?
    Who has bloodshot eyes?
It is people who drink too much wine,
who try out all different kinds of strong drinks.
Don’t stare at the wine when it is red,
when it sparkles in the cup,
    when it goes down smoothly.
Later it bites like a snake
    with poison in its fangs.
Your eyes will see strange sights,
and your mind will be confused.
You will feel dizzy as if you’re in a storm on the ocean,
as if you’re on top of a ship’s sails.
You will think, “They hit me, but I’m not hurt.
They beat me up, but I don’t remember it.
I wish I could wake up.
Then I would get another drink.” Proverbs 23:29-25

She put him out like the burnin' end of a midnight cigarette
She broke his heart he spent his whole life tryin' to forget
We watched him drink his pain away a little at a time
But he never could get drunk enough to get her off his mind
Until the night
[1st Chorus]
He put that bottle to his head and pulled the trigger
And finally drank away her memory
Life is short but this time it was bigger
Than the strength he had to get up off his knees
We found him with his face down in the pillow
With a note that said I'll love her till I die
And when we buried him beneath the willow
The angels sang a whiskey lullaby
(Sing lullaby)
The rumors flew but nobody knew how much she blamed herself
For years and years she tried to hide the whiskey on her breath
She finally drank her pain away a little at a time
But she never could get drunk enough to get him off her mind
Until the night
[2nd Chorus]
She put that bottle to her head and pulled the trigger
And finally drank away his memory
Life is short but this time it was bigger
Than the strength she had to get up off her knees
We found her with her face down in the pillow
Clinging to his picture for dear life
We laid her next to him beneath the willow
While the angels sang a whiskey lullaby
(Sing lullaby)

Sentence Prayer

Jesus;
Keep me far from drunkenness
Who is not tempted to drown the realities of life away
Instead, fill me with you Spirit to
Comfort my sorrow and to extend compassion to others
Instead of living out of control
Fill me with wisdom, so I may soften reality
And build God’s Kingdom of a self-controlled life of
Love, Joy and Peace.

Amen
