Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit 2

Holy Spirit 23
Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit
Teachers Notes
Hook:  Where does the New Testament begin?

Tell Students to place red maker where they think the New Covenant or Testament begins.
The New Covenant does not begin Until it is instituted at the Lord Supper: Matthew 26:28, Mark
14:24, Luke 22:20 and John 13.
Many of our fears on this passage are alleviated if we understand it is part of the Old Testament Law,
and does not directly apply to us.  In our reading of the passages that contain the Sin of Blasphemy
against the Holy Spirit, who seems to be guilty?  The Scribes, Sadducees and Pharisee’s the shepherd of
Israel at this time.  They are guilty of Blasphemy of Holy Spirit because they have used God given
advantages to willfully plot to lie against God.

Their advantage?
1.       Educated
2.       Copies of Scriptures
3.       Seen Physical Manifestation of God in Jesus
4.       Saw the miracles done by Spirit of God willfully lied it was from Satan.
As Teachers and Leaders of the nation of Israel, they had a responsibility to point Israel to Messiah, instead they use their gifts to call God Evil and pace Satan on the Throne!

Book:  Blasphemy of Holy Spirit

Where are all the verses on the Blasphemy of Holy Spirit found?
Give them several minutes to find the verse they think contain all the Bible has to say on Blasphemy of
H.S.  The only verses the actually refer to Blasphemy of H.S. are  Matt 12:31,31, Mark 2:28-30, Luke
22:65.  There are other passages that talk about blasphemy this passages are the only one that state
blasphemy of Holy Spirit that is unforgivable.
It is clear to me Matthew and Mark are focusing on the same event, with just different details and
emphasis.  Luke has enough differences it may have been a separate incident.  Even if it is notices all
three passages: have almost Identical teaching in the surrounding context.  Let me give you three key
verses that for me help illuminate the Blaspheme of Holy Spirit.

But the Pharisees went out and plotted how they might kill Jesus. Matthew 12:13
He looked around at them in anger and, deeply distressed at their stubborn hearts, said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out, and his hand was completely restored. 6 Then the Pharisees went out and began to plot with the Herodians how they might kill Jesus. Mark 3:5,6
Luke 11:51-54 Yes, I tell you, this generation will be held responsible for it all.
“Woe to you experts in the law, because you have taken away the key to knowledge. You yourselves have not entered, and you have hindered those who were entering.”
When Jesus went outside, the Pharisees and the teachers of the law began to oppose him fiercely and to besiege him with questions, 54 waiting to catch him in something he might say.
Whatever the Blasphemy of Holy Spirit the context points to religious leaders with a stubborn ,
unrepentant heart despite all the manifestation of the Holy Spirit in the Word and in the wonders before
their eye.  But that is not the blasphemy than they went about lying or speaking  about God wrought
wonders, miracltes and prophecy of Old testament as works of Satan.
If you are fearful you have committed the unforgiveable sin:  Ask yourself have you witnessed  Jesus
earthly presence perform a work that defy the law of nature and then accuse Jesus of blasphemy?

When Did the teachers of the Law willfully begin to plot on how to kill Jesus?

In Matthew  and Mark Jesus heals a man with a shriveled hand.  Let me ask you do you know most every
one by name of face in this church?  If this man was born with a shriveled hand all including the Teacher
knew His story.  So when he heals a childhood friend and restores him; what is the normal response?
This is a god Thing, because it is God.
Instead the Teachers confronted by a clear miracle the healing of a shriveled hand and they know they
are at a cross road-If I say the man healed or those cast out by demons is done by the Spirit of God, then

I am saying the Kingdom of God has Come, and Jesus is the Son of God.  Because of their hate for Jesus,
In spite of the evidence, they in stubbornness and in willfulness attribute the works of God to Satan .
It is as if Jesus is almost saying I will give irrefutable proof through miracles and my teaching that I am
sent by God and Empower by the Holy Spirit to heal others.  Because you have rejected this
manifestations of God Spirit, you are on the precipice of an unforgivable sin; to look at Holy Spirit
healing and setting people free y-you are on the verge of blasphemy of Holy Spirit!

Who is Guilty and Who is Justified?

Have students read Matthew 12:22-24.  The lowly, the average person is able is see these healing,
teaching are a manifestation of God’s Holy Spirit and ask the right question: Could this be the Son of
David?”
The Teachers and Leaders do not deny the miracle; you get the sense whatever took place was
undeniable.  Since they can not deny the healing of a blind, deaf and mute man; they set their heart
against Jesus, which is setting their hearts against God and ultimately on the way to blasphemy the Holy
Spirit.
When we come face to face with God; do we repent and accept?  Or do we set out ways in opposition to
him?

How is blasphemy committed?

As we have looked at the definition of Blasphemy coupled with Blasphemy of Holy Spirit.  It is clear it is a public, direct assault on God’s credibility trying to lead others away from God.  What are some of the adjectives used to describe blasphemy?  Notice blasphemy is committed by the mouth because the heart is opposed to God’s manifestation to lead others astray!

What is the Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit?

Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is a continuous effort, of a person who maintains a deliberate effort to
oppose the Holy Spirit, by the teachers of the law in the Old Testament, who should know better.  With
the motivation that God is operating in “Unwelcome ways toward unwelcome ends.”  It is as if Jesus was
saying to teacher of the law: I gave you undeniable manifestation of the Spirit of God in the miracles and
in my teaching; when you willfully look at the acts of God and call them Satanic you cannot be forgiven
now or ever, because you have rejected God’s only way of salvation Jesus, through the manifestation of
the Holy Spirit!

Look: Can We Commit Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit today?

I say no, because these events . . .
1.       Occur under the Old Testament Covenant
2.       Jesus was Physically present and he himself did the miracles
3.       If we are asking can or have I committed this sin; we are innocent.  Because the sense is this is a determined effort to oppose God and mislead others.

Took: So How does it apply to us?

This is one more Scripture that is clear that Sin is dangerous and at some point you can reach a point of
No return.  Look at
Ephesians 4:17-19
1 Timothy 4:2
When the Holy Spirit speaks, When Holy Spirit Convicts; unlike the Pharisees we need to repent and
return to God.  Sin is serious and we should always run from it!
