It is important for us to remember the background of the Jewish audiences (and later the Gentiles), and how it would have been difficult for them to accept the gospel (not yet written) without gifts to confirm. Also, without the gifts, there would not have been a message (prophecy was a gift). For the gifts to have the desired effect, they would have to be obvious even to unbelievers

Read Acts 4:1-20

Once, the teachings were written down and confirmed, was there a need for a continuation of miraculous gifts?

Pray 

Come Holy Spirit,

Come on the soft steps of a child.

Come Holy Spirit,

Come on the gentle breeze.

Speak to me Holy Spirit,

Speak to me in the rustling leaves.

Speak to me Holy Spirit,

Speak to me in the rushing stream.

Move me Holy Spirit,

Move me like the harp strings playing.

Move me Holy Spirit,

Move me like the caroling wren.

Change me Holy Spirit,

Change my heart and make me live.

Change me Holy Spirit,

Change me so I do your will.
